I’m Catherine and I’m a private tutor, a former qualified and experienced secondary school English Teacher and the founder of English Home Studies.
My qualifications include:
Post Graduate Certificate in Secondary Education (PGCE)
Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Degree in English
City and Guilds Certificate in Teaching Basic Skills (Literacy)
Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) Certificate.
How can English Home Studies help my child?
I provide online English tuition in the following areas:
Functional Skills
KS3 (Years 7-9)
KS4 / GCSE (Years 10 and 11) English Language and Literature
English as a Second or Foreign Language
My tuition programmes incorporate a wide variety of techniques and strategies to support your child's learning and I adapt the content and teaching methods as necessary to help them to make the best progress. This might include re-visiting topics that have previously been covered in class, supporting reading comprehension and essay writing, revision of set texts, helping with the selection of revision resources and exam technique and practising spelling, punctuation and grammar.
I have had some experience in tutoring "reluctant" students in the past and have found that, in most cases, their negative attitude towards the subject comes from their belief (however untrue) that they are "just not good at English." Fortunately, after some tailored support, I have found that their confidence increases, the quality of their work improves and their objections can be overcome.
As previously mentioned, no amount of tuition will help your child if they are firmly opposed to the idea, are uninterested in improving their grades, fail to engage with the tutor and/or the lesson and consistently refuse to put any effort into their work.
Getting Started
When you first contact English Home Studies, please advise me of your child's:
Year group
Current grade / level (if known)
Desired outcome, such as the grade they need for a particular school or college course.
Frequency of tuition package you require (weekly or fortnightly)
Preferred lesson days and time
Preferred start date
For GCSE Exam preparation, it would also be really helpful if you could advise me of the exam board and set texts (Shakespeare play, 19th Century novel, Poetry Anthology and Modern Prose or Drama texts) your child is studying.

FAQ About Private English Tuition
Do you offer tuition throughout the year?
Most of the families prefer to have tuition during term time only so that they can go away during the school holidays. However, tuition can be arranged during the UK school holidays for Year 10 and Year 11 students so please contact me to check my availability.
How long is a tuition session?
Most of my students have 1 x 1 hour lesson per week. However, some of my younger
students prefer 45 mins and the older, GCSE students often request longer revision
session of 75-90 mins.
How much does it cost?
At English Home Studies, I offer a choice of tuition packages which start from £35 per
hour but vary depending on the child's level (KS2 -GCSE).
Which payment methods do you accept?
Payment can be made by credit / debit card (via Stripe) or by bank transfer. It can be made weekly, fortnightly, half-termly or termly but must be received at least 24 hours
in advance of the lesson.
